how to care for (not soothe) a canker sore?

i have a canker sore in my mouth where the inside of the lips meet the gums/bottom of the jaw. i know that to soothe the pain i need to keep using orajel (or similar), but how do i actually care for it as in keep it clean, etc, until it heals? inside of the mouth is hard to keep constantly clean, so how can i help speed the healing and care for it?
