Can a doctor help treat a very painful canker sore in the mouth near the gum? Or will it go away eventually?

Hubby has irritating canker sore in his mouth and I told him to see his doctor to get medicene to help. He is in constant pain and having trouble eating. Will a doctor help or should he just try something over the counter?

    For it place bit on qtip and the sore will numb the sore do this especially after meals and get tube of orabase will go away by itself but takes 1014 days.
